Why do people have allergies?

Always consult your GP when thinking of taking corticosteroids as a form of allergic relief for hay fever. Corticosteroid tablets can also be used for treating hay fever symptoms, although they take longer to work and are not as effective as the localised application of a nasal spray. Tablets are usually only prescribed in severe cases of hay fever, and even then only for a short time.

If you need to take both medications, you may be given a medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Most people with allergic reactions can go home and require no emergency blood tests. It is also possible that a topical steroid could irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction. If this happens, you will be given a different type of topical steroid treatment.

Non- Clinical

Your nurse will give the injection slowly to try and prevent this. Feeling hungrier can make it difficult to keep your weight down. Your appetite will go back to normal when you stop steroids – but some people need to diet to lose the extra weight. People can become excited, confused and imagine things that aren’t real.

Drug Allergy

You must also inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any medicines — including those not listed above. This includes prescription medicines, over-the-counter treatments and herbal treatments or supplements that you take. Avamys is a nasal spray which is used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (allergies) including a stuffy, blocked, runny or itchy nose, sneezing, and itchy, red or watery eyes. Although children are usually given the chicken pox vaccine, if your child is receiving high-dose steroids we recommend siblings or other close family members have it.

Topical steroid withdrawal reactions

We’ll arrange for a blood test to check your child’s antibodies to chicken pox and your child may need an injection to protect them, but your doctor or nurse will talk through this with you. The use of adrenaline (epinephrine) as an emergency allergy treatment is well understood by doctors, and it has saved many lives. If you’re at risk of experiencing a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), make sure you carry 2 adrenaline auto-injectors with you everywhere. Antihistamines block histamine from binding to its receptors in various parts of the body and this stops it causing the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Your appetite should go back to normal when you stop taking steroids. If you are worried about gaining weight, talk to your doctor or nurse. Patch tests are used to investigate a type of eczema known as contact dermatitis, which can be caused by your skin being exposed to an allergen. Another test to support the diagnosis of anaphylaxis is elevated plasma histamine levels.

Types of Steroids used for Hay Fever

If you need medical treatment for any reason other than cancer, always tell the doctors and nurses you are having cancer treatment. Give them the contact details for your cancer doctor so they can ask for advice. This gives your body a chance to adjust and get used to making its own steroids again.
